A heart murmur is an abnormal sound associated with the heart. It is very common for vets to hear heart murmurs in cats and they are frequently picked up in cats during routine appointments, such as during your cat’s annual vaccine appointment.
This murmur is caused by something causing the blood within the heart to be more turbulent, similar to water in a babbling brook. There can be many reasons for the murmur, and not all of them mean that there is anything wrong with your cat’s heart. Sometimes a murmur is present because the heart is beating so fast that it causes turbulence of the blood. This is pretty common at the vet because many cats can feel nervous at the vet. This may cause the murmur to be present only sometimes and at other times it is not present, especially when your cat’s heart rate is lower.
